Happy 202nd Birthday to Edgar Allen Poe.

I celebrated by reading his works. Glad he is being recognized, better late than never. He suffered greatly during his life, never was able to get out of poverty, even though he devoted his life to writing. Best known for 'The Raven' and 'The tell-tale heart', he is known as the father of mystery and horror short stories. His macabre writing perceives him as unhappy and full of sorrow but also made him one of the greatest writers. The tell-tale heart is hands down my favorite of his works followed by 'The Fall of the House of Usher'.

Book Review: A Bend In the Road

Where does a story truly begin? In life, there are seldom clear-cut beginnings, those moments when we can, in looking back, say that everything started. Yet there are moments when fate intersects with our daily lives, setting in motion a sequence of events whose outcome we could never have foreseen

I was skimming through a lovely blog today: http://bookquotes-bookquotes.blogspot.com/2011/01/100-reading-challenge.html#comment-form and came across this challenge and I wanted in right away since I'm trying to read as many books as I can this year.
Here it is:
DETAILS:
1. The goal is to read 100 or more books. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate. Posting on GoodReads or wherever you post your reviews is good enough.

2. Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Manga, Graphic Novels, Library books, Novellas, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts.

What doesn't count: Individual short stories or individual books in the Bible.

3. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

4. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

5. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2011. Books started before the 1st do not count. You can join at anytime.

In the news

As one of America's greatest authors, Mark Twain's work is known universally. It is only obvious that his work should be reviewed in school. In many school districts however, his books are banned for containing the 'N' word, or teachers are uncomfortable teaching the American classics because of the racial slur. A university English professor, Alan Gribben, is producing a new version of the books, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He is replacing the word nigger in 219 spots in Huckleberry Finn and 4 times in Tom Sawyer with the word 'slave'. This has raised a controversy around the literature world. Some believe the word belongs in the book since it is specifically about racism others think it's a great idea to remove that barrier and have teachers be comfortable teaching the American classics.
